Roots of Development is holding a Halloween night fundraising event, Under the Same Sky: An Event for Haiti, to celebrate the conclusion of its graphic design competition, Designs for Development. All proceeds from the event will go towards creating sustainable projects such as water facilities and economic initiatives in post-earthquake Haiti.

The event is at the Studio Theatre, 1501 14th Street NW, from 7 to 9 pm on Monday, October 31. Admission is $20, which includes an open bar and hors d’oeuvres. Veronneau, a DC jazz group, will entertain guests before the award announcement. The event is sponsored by three Logan Circle businesses: Rice Restaurant, Whole Foods Market and Studio Theatre.

Roots of Development is a non-profit organization that helps impoverished communities on the island of La Gonave, Haiti, obtain the resources they need to manage their own development. The organization uses an alternative approach to rural development by facilitating a process in which they listen to diverse community voices, build on the inherent strength of each, and complete community-driven projects that lead to a more sustainable future.

Haitian Ambassador Louis Harold Joseph will be on hand with other judges, including DC United’s Ben Olsen, to announce the winners. Guests will participate in the design competition by voting for the award winners in the “Pep La” (“The People”) category.

You can purchase tickets online at the Roots of Development website. You can also contact Brian Averill at [email protected] for more information.
