After three plus years, CityMarket will finally break ground this week. The project will fill the area between O and P Streets and 7th and 9th Streets NW. DCMud reports on the day’s events, which kick off at 10 am. (Of course, we thought construction was beginning in September 2010.)
For those worried about the return of the Giant, the start of construction triggers the two year period that Rhodeside Construction has to re-open the Giant. I know that sounds weird — developers opening grocery stores — but the city demanded the swift return of the supermarket to the local community and that’s how it works.
The new City Market will be a one million square foot mixed-use development. A Giant Food supermarket will be the anchor store along with smaller retail stores. A 189-room hotel, affordable senior housing, and apartments and condominiums are on the drawing board for the market complex.
