More than 60 teams about 300 people turned out Saturday for the 2012 Green Rush Scavenger Hunt, which kicked off in Logan Circle at 2:30 pm. Teams of two to five people competed in challenges and decoded clues for a chance to win a $1,000 Grand Prize. There were additional prizes as scavengers checked in along the way at participating green businesses.
It was all part of Earth Day 2012 activities, which was officially Sunday. In addition to the Grand Prize, prizes included a Foodie Award, a Green Spirit Award, an Orange you Green Award and a Mow Down Thrown Down Award.
“Green Rush and our FWD: Your Fashion clothing drive were tremendous successes for Live Green and the green community at large. Participants had a ton of fun, Goodwill received a tremendous outpouring of support, and local green businesses got great exposure to new customers. Add in a fabulous after-party and it’s hard to think of how people could have had a more meaningful and enjoyable Earth Day weekend,” said Steve Ma, board president and co-director of Live Green.
Event sponsors and coordinators were Live Green and Clean Currents, which sells wind power to residential and business customers. Other local businesses sponsoring Saturday’s Earth Day event were The Bike Rack on Q Street, Cafe Green on 17th Street, Base Camp on 18th Street and Local 16 on U Street NW.
In addition, Saturday marked end of a month-long drive by Live Green and Repax. Since mid-March, DC residents leaving clothes in bins at green businesses and apartment buildings throughout the city as part of the FWD: Your Fashion Clothing Drive. More than 7,000 lbs of donations were collected, making this drive DC’s largest community clothing drive in support of Goodwill. Additional donations were accepted Saturday before the pick up at Logan Circle.
