While it may sound like the name of a trendy new restaurant landing on 14th Street, OPENKitch’n is far from a static dining establishment. In fact, OPENKitch’n is not a place, at all; it’s a progressive “culture crawl” along the 14th Street corridor.
Rebar is teaming up with local artists, musicians, restaurants and businesses to host an evening of small bites, live music and art. The “culture crawl” will take place on Saturday, August 18 from 5 until 9 pm. Participants will meet to begin the crawl on 14th Street NW, between Shepherd Street and Spring Street.
OPENKitch’n is an ArtPlace grant community project, designed to engage residents, and draw attention to the neighborhood’s own vibrant culture and art. The crawl will make stops at several locations for a sampling of local flavor and cool refreshments.
Some highlights planned for the night include:
- Tim Conlon & Albus Cavus, with DECOY and Chanel Compton will create murals at the corner of 14th and Randolph Streets NW.
- Chukwuma Agubokwu will perform HURR POEM (a performance piece in which Chuk turns himself into a moving poem by biking back and forth on 14th Street between the barbershops with poem stanzas attached to his back).
- Live music by 00Genesis (on the corner of 14th Street and Randolph Street) and Margot McDonald (in front of Red Derby).
- Red Derby will provide signature cocktails and ice-cream sandwiches.
Tickets for the evening are available in prices of $10 (includes three dishes of your choice for sampling), $25 (sample 8 dishes and refreshments of your choice) and $100 (sample all food and refreshments, receive a limited edition event print and enroll in an OPENkitch’n raffle to win an original artwork) and can be purchased online.
