Whenever I am complimented for an outfit, people always note how much they like my accessories. I get asked a lot how I became adept at accessorizing. Truth is, throughout my life, it’s been difficult finding clothes that fit my size and body type. But I tried to never let that stop me from being stylish. So what did I do? I would wear all black but then rock the brightest colors of bracelets, scarves, necklaces and earrings (SO MANY EARRINGS!) with which I could adorn myself.
My point in sharing my personal story is this: Accessories are your friends. For both men and women. Even if you don’t have problems finding clothes that fit, you can still use accessories to brighten up any outfit or, if in a fashion pinch, cover up the fact that you’re wearing the same thing two days in a row
Below is a list of accessory tricks to make your style go from average to amazing.
Don’t Be Afraid of Colors
Okay, I cannot stress this enough. Colors. Are. For. EVERYONE. And yes, while I know black is a color, it does not count in this case. Ladies, add a colorful silk scarf, multicolored bangle bracelets or layer a number of beaded necklaces to a black dress.
Throw on a large colorful belt and go for a pseudo-color blocking effect. Guys, find some colorful ties that aren’t just red or blue based. (They say a real man wears pink…something to consider…) Or better yet, try a bright bow tie. You could also spice up a dark suit with a pocket square. Worried about clashing colors? Use Google color charts and wheels to see what colors are complimentary or contrasting. Or be a rebel and clash.
Jewelry: Not Just for Women
You heard me, fellas. You can rock jewelry. I’m not talking about chandelier earrings and pearl necklaces (unless of course you’re into that). Nor am I referring only to cufflinks and tie clips. There are bracelets, necklaces and rings that are not only masculine, they are downright badass! Redeem has some great sterling necklaces for men right now.
Or want a little flare, try a turquoise and silver cuff. If you’re not into shiny, try leather! For example, the shop I work in (Blue’s Hard Goods) has a brand of leather bracelets by Will Leather Goods. All the bracelets are made from vintage horse and cattle reins. They are completely unassuming and are great for any rugged guy. Another great place to check out leather men’s accessories is Mutiny.
Not sure if you are a ring wearer? What of the ring had a skull and cross bones? Or looked like something out of Easy Rider? Get in touch with your inner biker and rock out with a sexy ring. Still not convinced? Pull out an old class ring. They never go out of style and are quite beautiful in their detail. Or better yet, if you inherited a relative’s class ring, what better way to honor them than by wearing it?
Aim to Start Conversation
When thinking about how you want to accessorize, aim to wear things that will make people stop and say “WHERE did you get THAT?!” While you can get great accessories at H&M, also consider that they mass produce. So the likelihood of someone else wearing the same earrings as you is high. While that doesn’t make those earrings any less awesome, it does mean you won’t be as unique as you might have hoped.
Make the effort and go hunting. Thrift stores are great for awesome, unique pieces that all fit within a budget. If you travel a lot (say, for work), don’t be afraid to treat yourself to something accessory related should you come across it on your trip. You can build up a collection of unique accessories just by doing your job!
Hopefully, these little tidbits will give you a boost to go out and accessorize yourself! Stay tuned in the next few weeks for another (possible video) post of Dafna’s Fashion Fridays!
