Georgetown University will hold a memorial service for one of the victims of last week’s deadly house fire on Riggs Place .
The memorial for Nina Brekelmans begins at 11 a.m., in Dahlgren Chapel on the university’s main campus at 3700 O St NW.
Brekelmans, 25, graduated in May from Georgetown University with a Master of Arts in Arabic Studies. She is remembered by family and friends as an avid runner and a lover of languages.
Brekelmans, who ran for the Georgetown Running Club and served as a mentor with Girls on the Run, previously studied abroad in Egypt and Jordan. She recently won a Fulbright fellowship, and planned to return to Jordan in the fall to research female distance runners and continue her Arabic language studies.
In her memory, Georgetown University will establish the Nina Brekelmans Scholarship Fund to promote the empowerment of women in the Middle East.
The university asks that donors direct inquiries and contributions to Rania Kiblawi at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, and to reference the Nina Brekelmans Scholarship Fund.
