Police car lightA teenager with a bat attacked and robbed a man of his bicycle in Columbia Heights last night, police said.

The robbery happened in an alley on the 1400 block of Irving Street NW about 6:30 p.m. The block includes the DC USA retail development and an entrance to the Columbia Heights Metro station.

The victim was walking in the area when a group of five people he didn’t know approached him and started arguing with him, according to authorities. The man then walked into alley where two young men attacked him with their hands before one of them hit him in the head with a small bat.

The teen with the bat proceeded to take the victim’s mountain bike before fleeing with the other individuals.

The man was treated at a hospital for injuries to his head, neck and shoulder, police said.

Two men also were assaulted and robbed of their bicycles in Park View later that evening, according to authorities.

The robbery happened about 10 p.m. at Georgia Avenue and Irving Street NW, about four blocks east of the earlier bicycle robbery.

The victims were in the vicinity when an unspecified number of people approached them, police said. The individuals then punched one of the men in the stomach and the other one in the face before swiping their BMX bicycles.

Police also reported that officers on patrol found three handguns in a barbecue grill on the 2300 block of 11th Street NW about 12:15 a.m. The area is on the same block as the Cardozo Education Campus.
