Cabbie Leaps From Car to Evade Armed Passenger on Florida Avenue

Police car light(Updated at 12:20 p.m.) A taxi driver thwarted an armed robbery in his cab after he jumped from his car on Florida Avenue near the Francis L. Cardozo Education Campus early yesterday morning.

The attempted robbery happened on the 1200 block of Florida Avenue NW about 12:15 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The cabbie was sitting in his car when a man he was dropping off pulled out a handgun, according to authorities. The armed man then threatened to shoot the taxi driver if he didn’t hand over his money.

Soon after, the driver leaped from his cab, which was not in park, police said. The car struck three vehicles, and the man with the gun got out and ran away.

Two people with knives also attacked a man in Columbia Heights early yesterday morning.

The assault occurred in front of the Claiborne Cooperative at 3033 16th St. NW about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The people with the knives cut one of the victim’s hands and caused minor injuries to his chest, according to authorities. The attackers then fled.

Police haven’t released any suspect descriptions.

A group of six people also attacked and robbed a man in Columbia Heights Saturday night.

The robbery happened on the 1400 block of Irving Street NW about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The man was walking the area when a half dozen people pushed him to the ground and took his cellphone from his hand, according to authorities. The robbers then ran away.

Police haven’t released any suspect descriptions.

A group of men with an unidentified weapon robbed two people of clothing and money in Columbia Heights early Saturday morning, too.

The robbery occurred on the 3100 block of 14th Street NW about 12:05 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Two men were arrested in connection with the robbery.

According to authorities, other crimes reported in the Borderstan coverage area since Friday include:

  • A robbery with a gun on the 700 block of Hamilton Street NW about 11:45 a.m. today.

  • An assault with a dangerous weapon on the 1200 block of 18th Street NW about 1 a.m. Sunday.
  • An attempted robbery on the 1900 block of L Street NW about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
