Two clothing retailers on the 14th Street corridor have been burglarized multiple times since last month, workers at the shops told Borderstan today.
A burglar or burglars hit Universal Gear at 1919 14th St. NW and Filson at 1534 14th St. NW twice during the past few weeks, taking coats each time. The total value of the stolen goods wasn’t clear.
At Universal Gear, which sells designer men’s clothing, a thief or thieves broke through windows on Nov. 8 and Dec. 1, grabbing “a lot” of winter coats, said Yeme Mengistu, the store’s director of operations.
A video police released today in connection with the Dec. 1 burglary shows someone throwing something at the shop’s window to shatter it. The person then climbed through the broken window and reemerged with coats about 2:30 a.m.
At Filson, which is owned by luxury retailer Shinola, a burglar or burglars struck on Nov. 21 and less than a week later on Thanksgiving, said Emilie Ptaszynski, a store employee. The thief or thieves broke in through Filson’s front door both times.
The store is planning to make its doorframe sturdier, Ptaszynski said. But for now, the door is boarded up.
“I think with the right doorframe, we’ll be fine,” she said.
