Breakfast and Brunch Spot U Street Cafe Closes

A destination for brunch and all-day breakfast on U Street is now closed.
“U Street Cafe is closed for business as of Jan. 7,” reads a sign on the front door at 1301 U St. NW.
Barista Stefany Valle, who worked at the cafe for about four months, said the closure may be related to a lack of customers during the week.
“On weekdays, it would be slow, but on the weekends, it could be very busy,” Valle said. “I just received a call from my boss to not come in because it’s out of business. … I came up here to see if it was true.”
“It’s the only job I have,” Valle said, standing in front of the now-shuttered eatery yesterday evening. “I have rent to pay and bills.”
Clover Restaurant Group, the company that owns U Street Cafe alongside Cafe Deluxe, Tortilla Coast and Tynan Coffee and Tea, could not be reached for comment.
