Peanuts aren’t all that Ivy and Coney bartenders are planning to hand out for free in Shaw tomorrow.
The Chicago- and Detroit-themed watering hole at 1537 7th St. NW is set to have complimentary Polish snacks as part of its second annual “Fat Tuesday” celebration.
In the lead up to the festivities, Ivy and Coney’s staff has made about 1,000 tiny pierogi and nearly 100 paczki, owner Josh Saltzman told Borderstan.
The pierogi offerings will include sweet cheese, potato and onion, and sauerkraut and bacon dumplings. The doughnut-like paczki (pronounced “ponchkey”) will have either custard or fruit jelly in them.
Saltzman said he doesn’t expect the food to stay around long, especially the paczki. But Lenten fasting doesn’t have to begin after the free snacks are gone.
Ivy and Coney still will have its Italian beef, “deep dish dog” and other food for sale.
“It’s fun to be there for the whole time,” Saltzman said.
Ivy and Coney opens at 4 p.m.
