Women Get One Free Mimosa at Lupo Verde on March 8
Italian restaurant Lupo Verde wants to treat local women to a free drink on International Women’s Day.
The eatery, located just off 14th Street at 1401 T St. NW, will give its female guests one free mimosa during dinner service on March 8, according to a press release.
The idea is based off of “Festa della Donna,” a decades-old Italian holiday where men give women a yellow mimosa flower.
Though this is the restaurant’s third time offering such a promotion since it opened in February 2014, reactions were mixed when Twitter caught wind of it yesterday:
@jsidman finally-all these years of fighting and struggle finally realized!

@jsidman When I lived in Spain, Int'l Women's Day was a much bigger deal than it is here, and lots of places did little specials.

@jsidman Of course, the point is more social justice than, say, free drinks, but I'm not surprised to see it being used that way.

Pretty sure this and other ladies nights (if a man asks and is denied the freebie/discount) is illegal in DC https://t.co/ZzYAcMtD8J

Despite the Twitter naysayers, Lupo Verde partner Antonio Matarazzo said the event is simply about honoring women.
“This is part of our Italian culture we grew up with and we want to carry on the holiday tradition as our families have for generations, like Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day here in America,” Matarazzo said. “We don’t think of the political aspects surrounding this or anything sexist by celebrating this women-oriented day.”
