The violent robbery occurred about 5 a.m. Sunday on the 3000 block of Georgia Avenue NW, which includes Bruce Monroe Community Park.
The driver picked up several men on the 1900 block of 9th Street NW near the U Street corridor after they agreed to pay him $30 up front and $20 after the ride, according to authorities.
But when the man dropped off his passengers, he got into an argument with them and received a punch to the face. The people he drove then dragged him from the car and punched and kicked him on the ground. They took their $30 back soon after.
The victim eventually picked himself up and got away to call police.
Nathaniel Ambaye, 20; Dawit Abate, 21; and Yosef Tadele, 30, were arrested in connection with the robbery. Information on their lawyers wasn’t immediately available.
In addition to the armed robbery at a Compass Coffee in Shaw Saturday, other crime since Friday involved a group of would-be thieves who punched and tried to rob a teenage boy about a block east of Meridian Hill Park.
The attempted robbery happened on the 2400 block of 14th Street NW about 5 p.m. Friday.
The boy was walking with his bicycle in the area when someone ordered him to give it up, according to authorities. But the teen refused.
A group of four individuals then attacked him, punching him in the face. The assailants soon after tried to take the boy’s cellphone and wallet before fleeing without anything.
Authorities haven’t released any descriptions of the suspects.
