Locals are set to converge on the U Street corridor with mulch, flowers and shovels for a little spring gardening this weekend.

The 13th annual “Vermont Avenue Garden (Work) Party” is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Residents interested in participating should meet at the African American Civil War Memorial at U Street and Vermont Avenue NW.

No experience or tools are required to help. But volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, small trowels, shovels, kneeling pads and wheelbarrows, if they have them.

Helpers will receive a free breakfast, lunch and drinks.

“This is a great way to meet your neighbors and take pride in the beauty of a vital part of our city,” a Facebook event post says.
