Donut fans line up in Dupont 2016

Want a free donut today? Hope you don’t mind waiting.

As many as two dozen people were spotted lining up for free donuts at the Dupont Circle Krispy Kreme (1350 Connecticut Ave. NW) around 9:30 a.m. today. And it’s likely to get crazier later, employees at the store said.

The donut chain is slinging free pastries all day today as part of its National Donut Day promotion. Patrons can visit any Krispy Kreme for a free donut of any variety, the company said in a press release.

Do people really line up for free Krispy Kreme? Uh, yes. Check out these photos from last year’s extravaganza:

  1. Actually, the long line is for people waiting to buy multiple donuts, not get a free one. Those getting a free single donut were instructed to walk in “to the left” of the line and ask for one. I was in the line this morning. Some people in line might be confused and think it’s the line for free donuts (as I did) due to poor signage and instructions from the staff.
