Our latest Pet of the Week is Asha, a mixed breed pup saved from the illegal dog meat trade in Thailand. Here’s an excerpt from her bio shared by Rural Dog Rescue:
Asha is an approximately three year old mixed breed who arrived in D.C. from Thailand on March 22nd, rescued from the illegal dog meat trade. Asha is very friendly and loves seeing new people. She is eager to please and has lots of energy for daily walks. She is good with other dogs and likes to play. Asha presents many of the Jindo breed traits – incredibly smart, clean, athletic, hunters, clever escape artists, generally quiet but good guard dogs, and extremely loyal. She has the potential to be an amazing dog but her experiences have also been traumatizing. Asha is not for everyone; she is a project dog. She needs someone who is willing to devote much of their time and patience to helping her get out of survival mode, understand her anxiety, appreciate her breed, and someone who can teach her how to ‘be’ that amazing dog. During car travel, Asha is very anxious. She will shake in unfamiliar surroundings, and is wary of strangers. Outside, she is highly prey driven and thus searching for escape routes, or is hyper-focused and frantically rooting for anything that may be hiding underground.
Even though she is impeccably house-trained, to keep Asha as calm as possible during her transition from Thailand, she has spent most of her time in a ‘Florida room’ with a concrete floor that does not beckon her to dig for rodents. Though traumatized, Asha remains very reserved and respectful, she is a gentle girl who happily greets us with a soft wag and a howling song! She loves to go for bike rides and is slowly gaining more confidence in her surroundings. She cannot wait to find a forever family that will help Asha become the wonderful dog that she wants and deserves to be.
