Dozens of locals have lined up to win a year’s supply of sandwiches.

Capriotti’s, the Delaware-based sub chain at 1800 M St. NW, is celebrating the company’s 40th birthday today by slinging a voucher worth 52 Bobbie sandwiches to the first 100 customers who walk through the door. The Bobbie, a sandwich made with turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce, is rumored to be among Vice President Joe Biden’s favorite sandwiches.

Naturally, people began lining up at the store early this morning.

“This is the tastiest chain sandwich in the world and if they want to feed one to me once a week for a year, that’s a deal I’m willing to take,” said diehard Capriotti’s fan Mark Samburg, who got in line around 4:30 a.m. “And if I get tired of it after a year there’s a lot of folks living on the streets around here who I’m sure would really appreciate a turkey sandwich.”

Dalton Macdonald, who was waiting in line with a friend, said he’s a fan of the sub shop and figured he’d drop by.

“We work right down the street,” Macdonald said. “No where else around here does anything cool like these giveaways.”

Though the line hadn’t yet reached 100 people around 9:30 a.m., it was quickly growing. By 10 a.m., it wrapped all the way around the block and down 18th St. NW.

“I got here like ten minutes ago,” said Craig Stokes. “My friend who’s at the front of the line said there were only 50 people in line, so I figured I’d come.”

The chain is also set to dole out cards worth one free sub to the next 50 guests in line and give away $2 coupons to everyone else who eats there that day.
