(Updated at 8:37 p.m.) Smoke poured from a vent after an underground Pepco transformer caught fire downtown earlier this evening, authorities said.
D.C. Fire and EMS personnel rushed to intersection of Desales Street and Connecticut Ave. NW around 7:30 p.m. this evening. Fire crews were initially alerted to “smoking manholes in [the] area of Desales,” according to D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Doug Buchanan.
“It came from an underground transformer vault,” said D.C. Fire spokesman Vito Maggiolo. Nobody was injured during the incident, he added.
A D.C. Fire and EMS video tweeted just before 8:30 p.m. shows smoke pouring from a vent in front of Panache Restaurant (1725 Desales St. NW):
