Man Beaten Unconscious in Violent Columbia Heights Robbery
Thieves punched and kicked a man until he was unconscious during a robbery in Columbia Heights last night, police said.
The crime happened on the 3600 block of 11th Street NW about 9:30 p.m. Monday.
The victim was crossing Otis Place NW when he first noticed four people, police said. He then saw them again, and they told him to “get down,” knocking him to the ground, according to authorities.
The attackers soon after started to punch and kick the man in his face and other parts of his body until he lost consciousness. At some point, the assailants took the victim’s wallet and cellphone and fled.
The man was brought to a local hospital with “significant injuries,” according to police.
Authorities haven’t released detailed descriptions of the suspects.
Cops also caught a man who ran from police investigating a burglary in Bloomingdale yesterday morning, according to authorities.
The break-in occurred on the unit block of Bryant Street NW about 9:30 a.m. Monday.
At least one person kicked in the front door of a home with a woman inside and ran off with items from the house, police said. Cops responding to the scene soon after spotted two people, one of whom had a bulky pillowcase.
The duo then ran from the officers, who chased them. But the individual with the pillowcase didn’t get away.
Police were able to arrest 20-year-old Curtis Eugene Mozie Jr. of Northwest D.C. in connection with the crime, according to authorities. All of the items in his pillowcase belonged to the victim, police said.
Information on Mozie’s lawyer wasn’t immediately available.
Police haven’t released descriptions of any other suspects in the burglary.
A would-be thief pistol-whipped and tried to rob a man in Mount Pleasant last night, too, police said.
The attempted robbery happened on the 1600 block of Monroe Street NW about 8:30 p.m. Monday.
The victim was walking about two blocks north of the Mount Pleasant Library when a man told him to “shut up” and tried to pin him down, according to authorities. At some point during the scuffle, the attacker pulled out a handgun in an attempt to rob the victim.
Another man soon after joined the gun-toting individual, who used his weapon to hit the victim in his head several times.
The victim eventually screamed for help, and his assailants fled.
The man declined medical attention.
