Our latest Pet of the Week is Paddington, a dapper dog with an Instagram account. Paddington is also the proud winner of the Borderstan/The Cheeky Puppy Halloween photo contest.

Here’s a little more about Paddington from his owner:

Paddington Kattan — better known to friends, neighbors and legions of Instagram fans as Paddy the Fatty — is one of the most dapper dogs around. Perennially dressed in a bow tie or bandana, Paddy displays a certain sartorial swagger whether he is surveying his domain from his Kalorama balcony or charging down Connecticut Avenue to stock up on cow ears and bully sticks at The Cheeky Puppy. Constantly at odds with his human, Ilana, over the lack of crispy bacon in his daily diet (Paddy is unswayed by kosher dietary laws), he is nevertheless a doting pup who rewards his mom for her love and care by jumping on (almost) everyone who comes to their house.

The escape game craze has been doing formidably in Washington D.C., as locals love to try challenging puzzles one after another. However, not all escape rooms are created equal, and with such a new phenomena, people do not always know what to expect from the genre. Weeding out the best from the rest is not an easy task, but watching out for a few clues can certainly help!

Escape rooms all have a special place in our heart because they give us a free pass to do what we all secretly love: play!

At the heart of a good escape game lies a strong element of interactivity, or as Alex Gerasimov, owner of Insomnia Escape Room D.C. puts it, “we see people go crazy in our rooms when they get to interact with their environments. Levers, secret buttons, props, they love it! People are so used to playing on their devices, that funnily enough, actually touching objects feels different!”

The best escape rooms in town all make it a point to have an engaging atmospheres too. There is always a theme, or basic story, to an escape game. Be it zombies or mysterious murders, creating the right atmosphere is tougher than it seems!

“We believe in having real props. Plastic and cardboard might look good on the silver screen, but in real life, objects got to have gravitas. You have to go real, otherwise it will not feel right. Bookshelves, clothes, even prop guns, everything! A well-built escape room will make you feel like you are traveling back in time to the prohibition era, or you are entering a magical wonderland, and not just pretending to be there,” says Gerasimov.

But interactivity and atmosphere alone cannot be the sole driving forces behind the design of an escape game. “The most important factor is always the design. Game-mechanics, the logic behind it. You have to make it a challenge, but not too difficult at the same time.”

Gerasimov even draws parallel with other, much older forms of entertainment: “keeping the audience engaged for an hour, building excitement levels, and ramping up for a big reveal is vital. It’s art, really. All one big magic act! In this sense escape rooms are theater and magic, redressed as puzzles! We [the room designers] are the directors, and you are both the actors and the audience!”

Insomnia stands by these values, offering complete historic immersion. Their prohibition era room, for example, presents a uniquely local escape room D.C. experience making it a must for all escape game lovers!

Our latest Pet of the Week is Dominick, a 10-month-old black cat rescued from a shelter Pocahontas County, W. Va. Here’s a little bit about him from his foster parent, Jodi:

My name is Dominick and I’m about 10 months old. I was rescued from a shelter in Pocahontas County, WV and I arrived in the D.C. metro area just a little while ago, hoping to find my forever family. I am part of the elusive “urban panther” tribe, meaning I’m a black cat. I’ve very soft and silky, or so foster mom tells me. I currently live with an annoying dog who tries to lick me ,and two other cats, and one of them is always licking me too. I’m very chill and I take this all in stride. I love to curl up next to foster mom or just watch the world outside the window. I was in a cage at the shelter since October, so I spent most of my life behind bars and now I’m just enjoying a different view. I’m very sweet and calm, but I do have a playful side and I’m just now discovering the joys of cat toys.

Those interested in adopting Dominick can find more infromation on the City Dogs Rescue adoption page.

Pet of the Week: Asha

by Borderstan.com June 20, 2016 at 12:00 pm 0

Our latest Pet of the Week is Asha, a mixed breed pup saved from the illegal dog meat trade in Thailand. Here’s an excerpt from her bio shared by Rural Dog Rescue:

Asha is an approximately three year old mixed breed who arrived in D.C. from Thailand on March 22nd, rescued from the illegal dog meat trade. Asha is very friendly and loves seeing new people. She is eager to please and has lots of energy for daily walks. She is good with other dogs and likes to play. Asha presents many of the Jindo breed traits – incredibly smart, clean, athletic, hunters, clever escape artists, generally quiet but good guard dogs, and extremely loyal. She has the potential to be an amazing dog but her experiences have also been traumatizing. Asha is not for everyone; she is a project dog. She needs someone who is willing to devote much of their time and patience to helping her get out of survival mode, understand her anxiety, appreciate her breed, and someone who can teach her how to ‘be’ that amazing dog. During car travel, Asha is very anxious. She will shake in unfamiliar surroundings, and is wary of strangers. Outside, she is highly prey driven and thus searching for escape routes, or is hyper-focused and frantically rooting for anything that may be hiding underground.

Even though she is impeccably house-trained, to keep Asha as calm as possible during her transition from Thailand, she has spent most of her time in a ‘Florida room’ with a concrete floor that does not beckon her to dig for rodents. Though traumatized, Asha remains very reserved and respectful, she is a gentle girl who happily greets us with a soft wag and a howling song! She loves to go for bike rides and is slowly gaining more confidence in her surroundings. She cannot wait to find a forever family that will help Asha become the wonderful dog that she wants and deserves to be.

Last May, we put on our very first ALS Fundraiser & Silent Auction event at Penthouse Pool Club at the Yards.

Through ticket sales, silent auction items and bar revenue we were able to raise over $25,000 for Augie’s Quest, an ALS research initiative dedicated to finding a cure for the disease. Last year was such a success we can’t wait to do it again bigger and better this year.

SweatBox photo via VIDA Fitness

Game on! Get ready to sweat at SweatBox – the original boutique fitness concept designed to improve cardiovascular endurance while building lean muscle mass and improving flexibility. Urban Adventures Companies, Inc, the parent company of VIDA Fitness, announced today that SweatBox will officially open for business on Wednesday, May 4. UA Companies conceived the SweatBox training method based on the scientific principles of Heart Rate Training, resulting in a unique workout experience that combines aerobic and anaerobic intervals to achieve optimal performance levels within one 50-minute, high-intensity training period. The grand opening marks the start of a full class schedule offered seven days a week with morning, afternoon and evening sessions and single or monthly rates.

Located at 1612 U Street, NW off the lobby of UA Companies’ flagship Fitness and Lifestyle Complex, the 1,725-square-foot studio space with 23 workout stations, provides each participant with their own “box” – a raised platform that consists of dumbbells, XT Suspension Trainers, and a Matrix IC7 Coach by Color indoor cycle – ensuring individuals have access to everything they need all in one place. SweatBox is designed with a limited class size so each participant receives the personalized instruction needed for a technically superior workout, while maximizing gains and minimizing risk of injury.

With the combination of Matrix IC7 Coach by Color bikes and MYZONE heart rate monitors participants will receive real-time performance feedback via an easy-to-follow color queue that illuminates on the indoor cycle and throughout the entire studio. All workouts are documented and downloaded via Bluetooth technology right to the participant’s smart phone, which offers a social integration component to track progress and connect with friends. Big screen TV’s located outside the studio display minute-by-minute results at the conclusion of every class.
Designed by the concept team at UA Companies, WDG Architects of Washington, DC and Stoneking- von Storch Architects of Charlottesville, VA, SweatBox puts cutting-edge studio fitness equipment and biometric technology into an industry-first box theater setting. The blacked-out studio is lit exclusively via programmable LED theater lighting. This allows the entire studio to change color, intensity and hue based on what the SweatBosses are coaching at each moment during the session.

Upon entry to the softly lit SweatBox studio, participants are greeted with the Matrix IC7 cycles that line raised platforms on each side of the room with XT Suspension Trainers and three sets of dumbbells situated alongside the bikes. As the session begins, the lights go down, the exceptionally clear and powerful On Point sound system turns up and the trademark Sweatbox recording announces the countdown to session blast off. Fifty minutes later participants will leave SweatBox exhilarated, exhausted and fit.

“SweatBox is the next big thing in fitness and will revolutionize the way people workout,” says David von Storch, President of SweatBox. “This cutting-edge program allows individuals to push themselves to the best of their abilities, track their own performance and improve at their own pace. It will leave you breathless and totally addicted.”

Over the next five years UA Companies plan to open multiple SweatBox locations throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area with intentions to serve neighborhoods that large gyms do not currently occupy.

SweatBox is a one-of-a-kind, nonmember fitness-training program with a pay-per-session fee. Each session ranges from $29-$39 or $229 a month for unlimited classes. For more information or to sign up for a class visit www.sweatboxdc.com.

The Adams Morgan location is certainly a strong selling point for the new boutique condo development called Ontario 17. And to be sure, having a residence walking distance from two Metro stations, more than 30 eateries and who knows how many nightclubs and other cultural amenities is, decidedly, an important benefit.

But the standard of living is not to be overlooked, either.

The newly constructed 80 units, which boast sleek European finishes and clean, contemporary styling, have been designed for maximum air and light, with oversized windows and balconies–in some cases, two balconies–bringing the outdoors in in the middle of Adams Morgan.

The rooftop terrace common area, with its warming fire pit and panoramic views of Washington’s signature sights is another source of natural inspiration.

The best part of that location? The residences of the seven-level, key-controlled, dual-elevator building are on the quiet side of Columbia Road, said Brenda Moreno, the McWilliams Ballard sales manager for the property. “It’s great being in an established neighborhood and having everything very convenient, but you’re on the quiet side of the neighborhood,” she said.

She also pointed out that Ontario 17 has been built to accommodate a pedestrian lifestyle, if that’s what the resident desires. The location scores an enviable 94 point “walk score” from Walkscore.com, which measures pedestrian access for major urban centers. (A 94 means “daily errands do not need an automobile.”) Walkscore also gives the area an 82 for ease of transit and a 90 for bicycle living.

Although there is a covered garage, many of the current residents–the building is enjoying 70 percent occupancy since opening at the end of August–are taking advantage of the secure bicycle racks and the built-in bike pump.

In addition, the building is on convenient bus lines and the nearby Metro stops are Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights.

Ontario 17 gets its name from the historic Ontario Theatre. The original façade has been incorporated in the design of the new building. Check it out here.

Ontario 17 is at 1700 Columbia Rd. NW. Open house hours are from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment. Contact Brenda Moreno at 202-297-7610 or [email protected]

MyZone Physical Activity BeltYou know you’re sweating buckets and can feel your heart pumping like crazy, but do you know if you’re functioning in an aerobic or anaerobic zone, or what percentage of your maximum heart rate you’re using? Most likely not, since it’s impossible to guess this information without the use of a device monitoring your heart rate.

Heart rate monitors make a world of a difference for individuals looking to increase their cardiovascular endurance and track how hard they’re actually pushing themselves during workouts. If you like viewing the amount of calories you’ve burned after a cardio session, a heart rate monitor provides a much more accurate number than a standard summary from a treadmill or elliptical. Because it’s actually measuring your effort and exertion, not just generic information punched into a machine, you’ll find that your actual calories burned is usually a very different number than what a piece of equipment will tell you.

Here at VIDA, we spent a lot of time researching the most advanced heart rate monitoring systems on the market to find the most fully functioning device to recommend to our members. The MyZone MZ-3 belt (and corresponding MyZone app) incorporates several unique features unparalleled in the heart rate monitoring world that we know VIDA members will love!

These features include the ability to live-track your effort exertion by the second on your phone, personalized workout summaries emailed to you after every session, and the point-earning feature which adds a competitive element to your workouts.

So how does it work?

promoTRXIn TRX, you’re using body weight, gravity and two suspension straps to perform literally hundreds of different exercises. The workouts are fast, effective and can target every muscle in your body with just one piece of equipment.

By placing your hands or feet in the straps hanging from the ceiling, the number of different exercises you can perform using your own body weight as resistance is limitless. In addition to whatever muscle group you’re focusing on, your core will be fully engaged during every exercise — two birds with one stone.

The versatility of TRX is what makes it so effective for people of all fitness levels. The difficulty of any TRX exercise is solely based on your body position and angle of leverage, which puts you in complete control of how challenging your workout is. If something feels too hard or too easy, you can adjust your feet just a few inches in either direction to find the right level of resistance for you.

Personal Trainer and TRX instructor Jeffery Cain uses TRX in addition to his weight training to focus on muscle toning. He explains TRX as a challenging, high intensity, dynamic cardiovascular workout that also teaches proper form for beginners.

“TRX is especially good for people who may be timid about weight training. It’s a great way to perfect your form before hitting the free weights or squat rack,” he says.

Both Reformer and TRX classes meet in small groups — Reformer no more than 4 per class, TRX usually maxes out around 6 — which ensures you receive individual attention from the instructor. Each exercise is demonstrated beforehand and the instructor is always close by if something feels off or if you need help getting your positioning right.

If you’ve been peeking into the TRX or reformer studios, now is your chance to see what all the hype is about. Check with a trainer or instructor at your VIDA location to see if you can sit in on a class to get a feel for it. Once you’re sold (and sore), you can purchase a 50 pack of TRX or Reformer training sessions during the month of February and receive one month of free VIDA membership.

As someone who just tried both of these classes for the first time this week, I can say with confidence that your body will thank you for adding them to your routine. Just be ready to feel sore in places you may not have felt before.

Mention turn-of-the-century and Logan Circle in the same sentence and grand Victorian homes come to mind. But is that the real world?

Today’s Logan Circle captures a unique look in the growth and development of the neighborhood as those historic buildings that once housed auto shops, horses and Laundromats are now stunning examples of modern interior design and habitation on a smaller level for single professionals and families alike.

So, how does Washington’s most talked about neighborhood keep its unique and historic character in the modern realties of today’s housing market? Find out as this year’s Logan Circle Holiday House Tour reveals the before and after architectural success of the neighborhood’s new century that’s made it not only the place to be seen, but the place to live.

An 1812 home’s top floor and attic turned penthouse entertainment area is just one of the unique sites to be seen this weekend. See the variation of a top floor and basement level apartment in the same building that show modern chic and functional living and where the next unit is headed.

Each year, Logan Circle Community Association (LCCA) hosts this annual holiday event that kicks off the season in style. Following the tour, enjoy the unique musical talents of harpists and carolers at the annual Wassail Party hosted at Studio Theatre (1501 14th St. NW).

Advance tickets are $30 and can be purchased online until Saturday, December 5. Tickets on the day of the tour are $35 at Studio Theatre or Old City Farm and Guild

Proceeds from the event will continue LCCA’s longtime mission of providing an
effective voice for a diverse residential and business community in its historic neighborhood while building a thriving future.
