Commissioners with Dupont Circle’s ANC 2B had some strong words for Claudia’s Steakhouse (1501 K St. NW) over allegations that the restaurant repeatedly blocked a sidewalk and bike lane along 15th Street NW several times since it opened in June.

Marlon Alfaro, general manager at Claudia’s; David Bowing, assistant general manager at Claudia’s; and Ben Tesfaye, valet parking manager for Claudia’s valet company, U Street Parking, attended the ANC’s monthly meeting on Tuesday to request that two metered parking spaces near the restaurant be allocated for evening valet parking use.

“[The restaurant] is located in an area where parking is difficult,” Tesfaye said. “There are garages in the area, but unfortunately they do close early.”

“We’re looking at eight to ten cars a night,” he continued. “Two, three people per car, spending $35 or $40, that’s a lot of revenue for the restaurant.”

But ANC 2B chair Noah Smith had some criticisms for the steakhouse’s previous operations along that stretch of 15th Street. (more…)

Washington Post Sign

The Washington Post headquarters looks a little bare now.

Workers were spotted removing the iconic Post sign at 1150 15th Street NW earlier this morning. All that remains is a ghostly outline of the company’s name.

Washingtonian broke the news yesterday that the old Post sign would come down today. The sign will be reinstalled on the fourth floor of the newspaper’s new headquarters at 1301 K St. NW when it opens next year.

Journalists gathered to say farewell — albeit temporarily — to the iconic sign by snapping selfies in front of it yesterday.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will repave the two-way bicycle lane on 15th Street NW.

The news was announced at the monthly meeting of Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2B/Dupont on Wednesday, July 12. The repaving will be finished by the end of the summer, according to Commissioner Noah Smith, 2B-09, The path runs through Smith’s district.

The bike lanes are in serious need of assistance, with southbound lanes between Massachusetts and K Streets often resembling a washboard.

On his website, Smith adds that there will also be new signs and markings on the path. The news came after the last November’s ANC 2B resolution calling for improvements to the path, and subsequent lobbying of the DC Council.

Smith has also announced that, after ANC prodding, DDOT has agreed to a request to coordinate the pedestrian walk signals through Dupont Circle. It will no longer be necessary for pedestrians to stand on the median between four lanes of traffic when crossing into or out of the circle.

"15th"

New residential building to 15th and V Streets NW. (Luis Gomez Photos)

Construction is expected to begin in July on the 95-unit residential building at the northeast corner of 15th and V Streets NW, next to the Paul Laurence Dunbar Apartments. As part of the development, Jair Lynch has been working with the residents’ association of the Dunbar Apartments to recapitalize and renovate the building, which holds a status as affordable housing for senior citizens.

The new building will not have the affordable housing requirements of the Dunbar Apartments. It will be on property that is now parking for the  Dunbar Apartments.

In November 2011, the Historic Preservation Review Board approved the concept design for the building, which includes 95 residential units in nine-stories with two levels of underground parking. The new building will also feature a fitness room, a roof deck and environmentally friendly finishes (the developers are currently seeking Energy Star Certification).

Project Update

Last week there was a community update:

  • Construction start is July 2013.
  • Permits have been issued for grading, sheeting and shoring to support excavation, foundation to grade.
  • JAIR LYNCH will continue to review development progress with ANC 1B, local civic associations and the other community throughout the project.

May 21 Meeting

On May 21 JAIR LYNCH is hosting a meeting with three members of ANC 1B and their constituents: ANC 1B12 Zahra Jilani (1B-12), Ricardo Reinoso (1B-05) and Deborah Thomas (1B-04). The meeting runs from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Paul Laurence Dunbar Apartment (2001 15th St, NW).

There is also a tentative date, June 19, for a meeting with the project contractor to explain construction details and how it will affect the neighborhood will look during construction. If you have any questions contact Kaleena Francis at kef[AT]jairlynch.com at JAIR LYNCH Development Partners.
