(Updated at 1:27 p.m. Friday) Here’s your chance to own a piece of legendary jazz club Bohemian Caverns.

The venue at 2001 11th St NW is auctioning off just about everything not nailed to the floor, meaning locals can buy up mementoes ahead of the bar’s closing.

Bohemian Caverns(Updated at 1:30 p.m.) Bohemian Caverns on the U Street corridor has racked up a few thousand dollars in fines for serving alcohol to minors last year, according to a D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board notice posted last week.

Mahogany LLC, which owns the jazz club and its Tap & Parlour bar, must pay a $4,350 fine by Feb. 10 to avoid having its liquor license suspended indefinitely, the panel ruled Wednesday. The business also cannot serve alcohol at Bohemian Caverns and Tap & Parlour from Jan. 5 to 12.

A representative of the jazz club and bar didn’t respond to requests for comment.

A building near the U Street Corridor is getting a mini makeover.

A new mural is being painted on the side of Bohemian Caverns (2001 11th St. NW) opposite U Street NW. The club says its old mural, which prominently depicted Miles Davis, was painted over on Wednesday.

Artist Aniekan Udofia is the man behind the mural. His artwork can be found on many walls across Northwest D.C. and include large-scale paintings in Shaw and Adams Morgan.

As of early Monday afternoon, the mural featured several musicians, many around a swirling, floating row of piano keys.

From Danny Shapiro

The last weekend of August is upon us: where did the month go? To celebrate the waning days of summer 2010, and before we all embark on a mass exodus for Labor Day Weekend, why not get out and enjoy the incredible live music on tap for this Friday through Sunday?

Here are three quick picks for you to sink your teeth into for a weekend of fun:

Friday: Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough

DJ Dredd Presents Michael Jackson Birthday Celebration at the 930 Club Could there be a better reason to throw on your dancing shoes (with white socks, perhaps) and join this ultimate dance party? Come honor the King of Pop’s birthday and his indelible imprint on all of our lives for this nonstop journey through the days of Thriller, Bad, Beat It, Dangerous, and all the other MJ cassettes you know are hiding under your childhood bed.

Saturday: Date Night, and the Music Is Right

Heidi Martin at Bohemian Caverns… Grab a friend or a loved one and make your way over to Bohemian Caverns for a night of jazz vocal elegance with Heidi Martin. Her lyrics bring us on a journey across the American South and all of its beauty, suffering, and resilient grandeur.  Her voice–a mixture of Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, and Anita Baker–is itself a masterful and refined instrument, and honed right here in our own Washington, DC.

The show is sure to allow all of your worries and concerns to drift far away from the District…just don’t forget about the person sitting next to you in the process. Heidi is performing two shows: 8:30pm and 10:30pm, so plan your night accordingly.

Sunday: Morrissey-inspired San Francisco Rock… ‘Nuff Said

Magic Bullets with Foul Swoops at the Black Cat… Just a sample of Magic Bullets’ music online (YouTube video) will send your indie music hearts aflutter. To be a young band with Smiths-like swing beats, vocal angst, and of course, those harmonies to win over any straggling naysayers…this band is on the rise, and a surefire breaking discovery for 2010.

And to cap off the weekend with a PBR in hand… what more could a 14th Street hipster ask for?

Danny Shapiro is an avid music lover who has the good fortune to live very close the music scene on the 14th and U corridor.

Here are some suggestions of things to do during the weekend in Borderstan, really close by or in the city.

Florida Avenue Grill is perfect for a weekend breakfast with wonderful home-style food at a very good price. At the corner of 11th Street and Florida Avenue NW, it has been a fixture in the area for years.

Lauriol Plaza at 1835 18th Street NW is probably one of the best places in town to enjoy Latin American food. Get there early for brunch, lunch or dinner; good prices for the food and service, but it is usually crowded.

Bohemian Caverns, Tribute to Nina Simone

Bohemian Caverns: “Tribute to Nina Simon.” (Photo: Luis Gomez.)

“FuckingA” is playing at the Studio Theatre, 1501 14th Street NW. “A bloody, modern riff on The Scarlet Letter, as only Suzan-Lori Parks could do it–with wicked poetry, biting comic songs and unforgettable style. In ‘Fucking A,’ Parks takes a wild, theatrical carnival ride through a post-apocalyptic future, where an outcast abortionist will do anything to reclaim her lost son.”

See “Tribute To Nina Simone” on Friday, July 3t, at the Bohemian Caverns at 2001 11 Street NW. “Blessed with a beautiful voice and a marvelous craft, Akua Kyerematin’s musical roots run deeply through the blues, jazz and R&B, her style, thus, is a fluid and constantly evolving neo-soul conglomeration that stresses jazz and the blues. Look closely at Akua Kyerematin today, for you will surely be hearing huge things about her tomorrow.”
