Espey Brown, Jr. was sentenced last Thursday to 14 years and two months in federal prison and five years of supervised release, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. The sentence comes after Brown pled guilty in February to possessing and intending to distribute at least 28 grams of cocaine base and using a firearm while committing a drug trafficking offense.
Brown was involved in a large drug distribution ring that operated in both the District and Maryland. In DC drugs were distributed primarily at the edge of Borderstan near the intersection of 7th and O Streets NW.
As part of the guilty plea, Brown admitted to supplying powder cocaine and crack cocaine to dealers between June 2008 and August 2011, who then sold the drugs at apartment complexes in Shaw including at 1330 7th Street NW and at the Kennedy Recreation Center at 1401 7th Street NW.
Seventeen people were arrested last August as a result of a three year investigation into the drug trafficking ring by the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department. Brown has been in custody since his arrest on August 9, 2011. So far, 12 of the 17 arrestees have pled guilty to charges.
