Sunday Update: I’ve been told that work will begin this week on the dog park and will take six to seven weeks to complete–in time for a spring opening.

This has to be the groundbreaking ceremony for the new, enclosed dog parks on 17th Street at S and T Streets NW. This is an approved project, but there certainly isn’t anything there as of today.

Hooray! The enclosed dog park–with lights soon to come–opened several days ago at 11th and R Streets NW. The entrance is on 11th Street south of R on the east side of the street. The park is adjacent to Shaw Junior High School. For now, the hours seem to be from around 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; the park will remain open until around 10 p.m. (I believe) once lights are installed.

I took our dog there last night. The park is nice, with about 75% covered with pea gravel and about 25% with mulch. It took our dog a little bit to get used to the rocks, but she soon adjusted.

Great news, dog owners of Borderstan. The new dog park that is under construction at 11th and R will be fully enclosed, according to Jesse Rounds of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation. Moreover, Rounds told Borderstan.com today that DPR is hoping to open the park in early November. Rounds said:

“Entry into the dog park (both for small dogs and big dogs) will be through double gates on the 11th Street side of the park. The fence will enclose a rather large area with approximately 2,000 square feet for small dogs and over 12,000 square feet for larger dogs. We’re looking forward to opening this park soon so that both dog owners and non-dog owners can enjoy the park while feeling safe.”

The dog park will be located on the soccer field near Shaw Junior High School.
