"crime"

Crime news from Dupont-Logan-U Street.

Police continue to investigate an attack inside of Manny and Olga’s Pizza at 1841 14th Street NW early Sunday morning. Based on video from the incident posted to WorldstarHipHop.com, a drag performer is involved in a verbal altercation with two females that turns into a physical fight.

The two females seem to instigate the physical fight after one was spit on, although it is not clear if the video shows the entire incident. The performer is identified by Metro Weekly as Heidi Glüm, whose real name is Miles Denaro (although he uses the last name DeNiro).

The video shows Denaro being pulled by the hair and beaten, and at the end of the clip he is bleeding from a head wound.

As Queerty reported, the video shows other customers and employees are slow to break up the altercation, and some seem to be cheering for the fight to continue. Denaro said he suffered cuts on his arms, hair loss, and a huge gash on his head in the incident. Queerty also published Denaro’s tweets from immediately after the attack, in which he claims he did not want to fight back because the attackers were female. He also used racially offensive language in one of his tweets.

According to the Washington Blade, both Denaro and one of the females in the video have filed police reports in the incident. Denaro did not call police at the time of the incident but accused both women of simple assault and a hate crime in a report filed Monday with the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Denaro, 24, says the women were making fun of his shoes and makeup and that led to a verbal altercation that turned physical after one of the women slapped him in the face and he spit on her. His report claims, and the video seems to confirm, that he was punched and kicked repeatedly in the incident.

One of the two women in the video, filed a complaint against Denaro accusing him of biting her in the leg and claiming he gave her HIV. That assault was classified in the report as an aggravated assault.

Denaro admitted to the Blade that he bit the woman, but says he did so in self-defense. Denaro, who is HIV positive (according to the Blade), can be heard in the video saying “you’ve got AIDS now,” but it is unclear if this is related to the bite or blood from head wounds sustained in the attack.

Both reports remain under investigation, and police have not yet made any arrests in the case.

Prior to the attack, Denaro was performing as Heidi Glüm just down the block at the Black Cat’s monthly “Gay/Bash” event. Glüm is scheduled to appear at next month’s event on July 12.

MPD Crime Database 14th Street NW

14th Street area: There were 7 robberies in which a gun was used during the first 9 months of 2010. (MPD Crime Database)

The year is three-quarters gone–Sept. 30 marked the end of the third quarter. We usually look at crime stats for the previous month and compare to the same month one year and two years ago. But, this month we’ll look at the numbers for the first three quarters of 2010 for the 14th Street area.

Unlike the U Street area–where violent crime is up this year–the 14th Street area shows decline crime across the board, including robberies and assaults. A look at the MPD’s crime statistics for the first 9 months of 2010 show that total crime is down 26% compared to the same period last year and down 6% from two years ago. The decreases are in virtually every category of both violent and property crime.

The 14th Street Corridor crime reporting area (see map above) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 14th and Q Streets NW–an area that roughly runs from 15th Street on the west to Vermont Avenue/Logan Circle on the east and from S Street on the north to Rhode Island Avenue on the south.

MPD Crime Database 14th Street

14th Street area: There were 18 robberies, no gun involved, during the first 9 months of 2010. (MPD Crime Database)

  • After a surge in 2009, the number of total crimes in the 14th Street area in the first 9 months of 2010 totaled 207. This compares to 208 crimes in the same period of 2009 and 221 in the same period of 2008.
  • There were 29 violent crimes in the Jan. 1-Sept. 30 period this year, down from 38 in the same period of 2009 and 33 in 2008. Violent crime is down 24% from last year’s surge, and down 12% from two years ago.
  • Property crime continues to decline in the 14th Street area (a trend seen in the U Street and 17th Street areas as well). There were 178 property crimes during the first 9 months of 2009, a 26% decline from the 242 property crimes in the same period of 2009 and a 5% decrease from the 188 property crimes in the first 9 months of 2008.

Robberies, Assaults, Gun Crimes

  • The number of robberies in the first 9 months of 2010 in the 14th Street area totaled 25–7 were committed with a gun and 18 without a gun. This compares to 33 robberies in the first 9 months of 2009 (12 with a gun) and 25 robberies in the first 9 months of 2008 (3 with a gun).
  • The number of assaults in the first 9 months of this year declined slightly: there have been 4 this year compared to 5 in the same period last year and 7 in the January through September period of 2008.
  • Total gun crimes are homicides, robberies and assaults committed with a gun. There have been 8 gun crimes in the 14th Street area this year, compared to 14 in the first 9 months of 2009 and 4 in the same period of 2008. While down dramatically from last year, the number of gun crimes is still double this year compared to 2008.

Total crime stats by category are below the fold.

U Street NW MPD Crime Database

U Street area: There were 16 assaults committed without a gun in the first 9 months of 2010. This compares to 6 in the first 9 months of 2009. (MPD Crime Database)

U Street NW MPD Crime Database

U Street area: There were 3 assaults committed with a gun in the first 9 months of 2010. This compares to 0 in the first 9 months of 2009. (MPD Crime Database)

The shooting, car crash and homicide at 11th and U Streets NW last Tuesday was a reminder that even in a relatively safe area of DC that tragedy sometimes strikes close to home. But, while homicides are rare in the U Street area, assaults and robberies are not so rare. (There was also a homicide on the 1900 block of 9th Street on May 28.)

Even as the strip of U Street from 9th west to 16th has rapidly redeveloped in the past decade–bringing in additional residents and people on the street–the violent crime rate has actually gone up in the past two years.

For the first 9 months of 2010 (period ended September 30), there were 62 violent crimes in the U Street area (see map). This compares to 51 violent crimes for the same period of 2009 and 46 in the first 9 months of 2008.

Percentage-wise, violent crime in the U Street area is up 35% in the past two years, on a year-over-year basis. 28 of 61 violent crimes in 2010 occurred on this stretch of U Street, not on side streets.

All numbers are from the MPD Crime Database. The U Street Corridor crime reporting area¹ (see map) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 12th and U NW–an area that roughly runs from 14th Street on the west to 9th Street on the east and from W Street on the north to S Street on the south.

  • Driving the increase is more assaults, both with and without guns. There have been 19 assaults in the U Street area in the first 9 months of 2010–compared to 6 in the same period last year and 7 in the first 9 months of 2008. Three of assaults this year involved a gun, compared to 0 in the first 9 months of both 2008 and 2008.
  • The number of robberies in the first 9 months of 2010 in the U Street totaled 41–13 were committed with a gun and 28 without a gun. This compares to 44 robberies in the first 9 months of 2009 (19 with a gun) and 38 robberies in the first 9 months of 2008 (10 with a gun). While robberies are down slightly from last year, they are still up from two years ago.
  • Total gun crimes are homicides, robberies and assaults committed with a gun. There have been 17 gun crimes in the U Street area this year, compared to 20 in the first 9 months of 2009 and 11 in the same period of 2008. While down from last year, the number of gun crimes is up 55% this year compared to the first 9 months of 2008.

While down from last year, the number of gun crimes is up 55% this year compared to the first 9 months of 2008.

  • Property crime continues to decline in the U Street area (a trend seen in the 14th and 17th Street areas as well). There were 203 property crimes during the first 9 months of 2009, a 42% decline from the 352 property crimes in the same period of 2009–and a 15% decline from the same period of 2008. Thefts are down noticeably, but the huge drop is in the number of thefts from autos, known as smash-and-grabs.

There were 203 property crimes during the first 9 months of 2010, a 42% decline from the 352 property crimes in the same period of 2009.

Total crime stats for first 9 months of 2008, 2009 and 2010 are below the fold.
