At least four drag queens are set to battle one another in simulated song in Adams Morgan tomorrow.
Duplex Diner (2004 18th St. NW) is set to host the “Queens for a Cure Lip Sync Battle” tomorrow night at 9 p.m. During the event, Jalah Nicole, Shaunda Leer, Desiree dik and Goldie DuCraix will perform two songs each as they battle for lip sync supremacy.
“Which queen will reign supreme?” reads a Facebook post for the competition. “Come and witness for yourselves. Your Friday evening will ‘rule!'”
The event will also feature drink specials and music until midnight.
Though there’s a $10 donation at the door, all proceeds from this event go toward The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, according to organzier Vanessa McDonald.
Adam and Khelan are back this Friday. Together they will once again celebrate the BreakfastClub kids. Get ready for great music and to remember tunes that you had forgotten.
The 8th BreakfastClub event is this Friday, May 17, and the mixes will be on. There is no cover and drink specials include $3 champagne cocktails and $7 orange squeezes — much better than slurping the milk from your sugary Ghost Busters cereal.
The party starts at 9 pm at Duplex Diner, 18th and U Streets NW. To get into the mood a little early, check out Khelan European Vacation mix and the newest mix from Adam.

Duplex Diner Reopens!
If you remember, Duplex Diner, the famed diner at 18th and U Streets NW, was sold to longtime bartender Kevin Lee, who closed it a little while back to make some minor renovations. Well, with a cute announcement on the home page of their website and a full article from the Washington City Paper, the diner is up and running. Lee is working on updating the menu to give it more of a southern twist. Look out for the official grand opening in a few weeks.

Duplex Diner Being Sold
The owner of the 18th and U Streets NW Duplex Diner has decided to sell this little slice of diner heaven. But don’t cry into your biscuits and gravy! He’s selling to longtime bartender, Kevin Lee, who will be briefly closing the doors to make some renovations. Check out the heartfelt announcement and the information about their renovation festivities going on June 20 to 27.
Waterfront Safeway, the Gay Slur and an Apology
DCist has the update on the saga of Waterfront Safeway’s handling of a cashier using a gay slur as customers checked out of the store. The cashier has now apologized, sort of. Can we all agree that if someone is demanding an apology, you should NOT say that, “I’m sorry if I offended you.” If people are writing about it this much, you clearly did offend them. What happened to just apologizing? And for that matter, what happened to basic decency and not resorting to hate and name calling? Also, Washington City Paper has more information and reports that Safeway says they have attempted to contact the couple directly to apologize to them.

Runners dash for the Church Street finish line at the 2009 High Heel Race on 17th Street NW. (Luis Gomez Photos).
Duplex Diner patrons will have the luxury of sitting down and sipping a cocktail while watching the Tuesday-night festivities on 17th Street NW — from the peace and quiet of the restaurant at 18th and Florida NW.
Diner owner Eric Hirshfield is offering a live video feed of the annual High Heel Race, including the pre-race fun, starting at 8:30 pm. Look for videographer Josh Siegel on 17th Street — he’ll be wearing the “Broadcasting Live to Duplex Diner T-Shirt.” Race time is at 9 pm.
VIP Passes Help Cover Costs
Another option is the VIP tented standing area for 50 ticket holders at the Church Street finish line. Get more details and tickets at Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets (HDCMS) website. HDCMS is a sponsor of the event, sharing costs and providing a clean up crew after the event. Your $40 ticket cost helps defray the cost associated with the High Heel Race.
Race Details
The event is sponsored by the Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets (HDCMS) program and JR’s Bar and Grill. You can purchase a VIP pass for the tented area at Church Street; proceeds benefi HDCMS — see details below. JR’s is the creator of the annual event, with the first race in 1986 — the year JR’s opened.
The Annual High Heel Race is always held the Tuesday before Halloween (unless it falls on the 31st, of course). While the race takes place at 9 pm, the two-or-so hours leading up to the race are the best part of the evening. Police block of 17th Street from S down to P and the parade of costumes — runners and non-runners alike — is the best amusement in town.
The race — which does begins on time — is a short sprint from S down to Church, about 1/5 of a mile. So, don’t’ be late or you’ll miss it.

DC is a town always brimming with happy hours, concerts, dance parties and benefits, especially on weekends. Let’s make this one special and come together as a community on Friday night at 18th & U Duplex Diner to support The Trevor Project.
Your $10 donation at the door will go directly to the project and you will receive discounted rail drinks all night, courtesy of Duplex Diner. The evening is titled, “We Made It – A Fundraiser for LGBTQ Youth (The Trevor Project).”
Not familiar with The Trevor Project? The Trevor Project is a nonprofit endeavor established to promote acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, and to aid in suicide prevention among that group.
It’s possible that you saw Ellen DeGeneres’s video message before you even heard about the “It Gets Better” project. DeGeneres’s video became viral following yet another tragic suicide of a teen who was a victim of cyber bullying. In addition to Ellen DeGeneres’s message, celebrities are speaking out to raise awareness of cyber bullying and bullying of gay teens.
In the new PSA spot, “It Gets Better,” celebrities encourage teens to reach out to The Trevor Project. Videos are being added to the “It Gets Better” project daily from people all across the country, whether they were bullied or not at one point in their lives. There are even former bullies apologizing, telling LGBTQ youth that It Gets Better.

NBC-Channel 4 has the story about a burglar who tried to rob Duplex Diner at 2004 18th Street NW after entering through the rooftop hatch.
- The good news: Police caught the burglar.
- The bad news: Police do not think this guy is responsible for the string of Dupont-area of home burglaries through rooftops.
- The story’s wild twist: The Duplex Diner owner was across the street having a drink and saw the burlar enter the diner!
- The quote: “[The hatch] hasn’t been used since a drag queen dropped down through it during our 10th anniversary,” said owner Eric Hirshfield.
