Editor’s Note: After posting the crime stats for the January through May period for Police Service Area (PSA) 208 (DupontKalorama), I thought it would be interesting to look at just May.

Why? I wanted to see if the increases in crime for the area took place mostly in the first four months of the year–and to see whether the stats were looking better for May. More specifically, I wanted to see if the trend that is evident in the stats for the first five months of the year were true for the most recent month.

Here is what I found. (more…)

Be careful going home from wherever in the early morning hours. Keep your wits about you and while it is better to walk with friends, numbers may not be enough to protect to you–especially when there is a gun involved. Five robbers, one flashing a gun, held up four people on Friday night/Saturday morning on the 2100-block of S Street NW at Phelps Place. No one was hurt, but be careful.

Here are the year-to-date (January 1 through February 28) crime stats for Police Service Area (PSA) 208 for the last three years: 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The most disturbing statistic for this two-month period is in the increase in crimes committed with guns: from 4 in 2008 to 13 in 2009 (details below). Robberies also increased noticeably from 22 to 30 for the January-February period.

The overall number of assaults actually decreased slightly. In terms of nonviolent crimes, thefts from autos continue to be a huge problem in PSA 208.
