Police officers appeared to throw a punch and use a baton in the arrest of a man they say assaulted them in Adams Morgan early yesterday morning, a video shows.

Cops were called to the 2300 block of 18th Street NW about 3 a.m. Sunday for a report of a “disorderly individual” when they encountered 27-year-old Marquis Colbert, Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Dustin Sternbeck told Borderstan this morning.

Once on the scene, officers found a “visibly upset” Colbert who became “physically aggressive” toward officers, Sternbeck said.

Mario Kart? Super Troopers? Emojis? It’s not just you. MPD’s Twitter account has been a little more… lively lately. Dustin Sternbeck, MPD’s new top spokesman, is part of the reason why.

Sternbeck, who lives in Leesburg and formerly worked as the spokesman for the Arlington County Police Department, stepped into his new at MPD role earlier this month. (more…)

Photo via Twitter.com/Marrakech_DCA recently released Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) report has shed new light on an alleged assault that caused D.C. police to order Marrakech Restaurant (at 2147 P St NW) closed for 96 hours earlier this week.

According to the report, which seems to vindicate Marrakech of improper conduct, the fight that broke out among several men inside the restaurant around 2 a.m. on last Saturday was “quickly defused” by members of the restaurant’s security.

The initial notice of closure, as first reported by an anonymous reader on PoPville, said that Marrakech may have violated D.C. Official Code when a bouncer allegedly put a male patron into a chokehold and dragged him from the building while breaking up a fight. It also alleged that restaurant management failed to “report the incident to the 911 system” after it occurred.

The ABRA report details exactly what led to several patrons being ejected from the restaurant’s “Aura Fridays” event early Saturday morning.

According to the report, a patron (named as C-1 in the report) was dancing when he bumped into another patron (C-2), causing C-2 to spill his drink.

C-1 agreed to purchase C-2 another drink, at which point C-2 and “several others” began punching and kicking C-1.

C-2 was then ejected from Marrakech by security. He later reported to police that he was choked and dragged while being ejected by a bouncer.

But the ABRA report says that claim is unsubstantiated. Security camera footage taken from the night of the incident shows a bouncer flagging down D.C. police with a flashlight just two minutes after the scuffle began. And neither the camera’s footage, nor a report given by Officer Herbert Rose, a D.C. police officer at the scene, indicated that the bouncer choked or dragged anyone in the restaurant.

Furthermore, Rose said in an interview included in the ABRA report that he “has no idea why MPD would close the establishment, nor why there was no investigation conducted prior to making that decision.”

“Officer Rose stated from what he observed,” continued the ABRA report, “Marrakech Restaurant appeared to do everything within regulation regarding MPD and ABRA requirements.”

The report concluded that Marrakech was in compliance with its ABRA licenses.

At an ANC 2B meeting last night in Dupont Circle, it was announced the closure notice would be allowed to expire, and that Marrakech would be allowed to reopen.

MPD was not available to comment at the time this article was published.

"crime"

Crime news from Dupont-Logan-U Street.

Police continue to investigate an attack inside of Manny and Olga’s Pizza at 1841 14th Street NW early Sunday morning. Based on video from the incident posted to WorldstarHipHop.com, a drag performer is involved in a verbal altercation with two females that turns into a physical fight.

The two females seem to instigate the physical fight after one was spit on, although it is not clear if the video shows the entire incident. The performer is identified by Metro Weekly as Heidi Glüm, whose real name is Miles Denaro (although he uses the last name DeNiro).

The video shows Denaro being pulled by the hair and beaten, and at the end of the clip he is bleeding from a head wound.

As Queerty reported, the video shows other customers and employees are slow to break up the altercation, and some seem to be cheering for the fight to continue. Denaro said he suffered cuts on his arms, hair loss, and a huge gash on his head in the incident. Queerty also published Denaro’s tweets from immediately after the attack, in which he claims he did not want to fight back because the attackers were female. He also used racially offensive language in one of his tweets.

According to the Washington Blade, both Denaro and one of the females in the video have filed police reports in the incident. Denaro did not call police at the time of the incident but accused both women of simple assault and a hate crime in a report filed Monday with the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Denaro, 24, says the women were making fun of his shoes and makeup and that led to a verbal altercation that turned physical after one of the women slapped him in the face and he spit on her. His report claims, and the video seems to confirm, that he was punched and kicked repeatedly in the incident.

One of the two women in the video, filed a complaint against Denaro accusing him of biting her in the leg and claiming he gave her HIV. That assault was classified in the report as an aggravated assault.

Denaro admitted to the Blade that he bit the woman, but says he did so in self-defense. Denaro, who is HIV positive (according to the Blade), can be heard in the video saying “you’ve got AIDS now,” but it is unclear if this is related to the bite or blood from head wounds sustained in the attack.

Both reports remain under investigation, and police have not yet made any arrests in the case.

Prior to the attack, Denaro was performing as Heidi Glüm just down the block at the Black Cat’s monthly “Gay/Bash” event. Glüm is scheduled to appear at next month’s event on July 12.

The owner of Cafe Ghana asked for assistance from MPD at last week’s Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2F/Logan Circle meeting.

After a briefing on local crime by a representative of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the proprietor of the Ghana Cafe (1336 14th Street) told the committee homeless people were harassing people in front of his restaurant.

He also reported homeless people participating in oral sex at a nearby bus stop. By the time police responded, the proprietor said, the behaviors had ceased. The MPD representative pledged to work on the problem.

"robbery"

Crime news from Dupont-Logan-U Street.

UPDATE: Police have made an arrest in the case, according to the Washington Post. James Edward Wade, 30, was arrested Saturday and charged with armed robbery.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is seeking a suspect in an armed robbery that occurred on a restaurant patio just east of Logan Circle last month. The incident occurred just before 9:30 pm on Friday, May 17, on the patio at Pizzoli’s Pizzeria at 1418 12th Street NW.

Police have posted surveillance video from the incident, which shows the suspect approaching the two male victims while they ate on the patio. After a brief conversation, he produced a handgun and stole money and an iPhone from the victims before fleeing.

The two male victims, who were interviewed by The Washington Post, described remaining calm even after the casual conversation with the suspect turned into an armed robbery. As the Post noted, the video posted Thursday has quickly gone viral with close to 25,000 views by Friday afternoon, making it one of the most highly viewed YouTube videos posted by MPD.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact police at 202.727.9099.
