Merry Christmas, Borderstanis, wherever you are celebrating the day. Please remember to be thankful on this day. We live in a wonderful neighborhood that offers us so much — nice neighbors, great local businesses and most of all, opportunity and hope.
In a time when too many people and families in America — and in parts of DC, too — are without jobs or are struggling to make ends meet, the Dupont-Logan-U Street area stands apart. Our community is prosperous, bustling and has a bright future. This is a day to remember that we are very fortunate, indeed.
You’ve probably heard that Mid City Caffe is up and running at 1626 14th Street NW (upstairs above Miss Pixie’s). It’s worth mentioning again because our one time there was enjoyable. Moreover, Luis liked the coffee; no small compliment from a coffee-consuming South American. Read what Luis said at One Photograph A Day.

Aug. 12: A humpback whale dives next to our whale-watching boat, off the coast of Cape Cod. (Photo: Luis Gomez, One Photograph A Day.)
Luis shot this photo of a humpback whale last Wednesday evening from our whale-watching boat off the northern tip of Cape Cod in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. (Luis has more whale photos at his blog). We were on a whale-watching cruise out of Provincetown, during our trip to Massachusetts last week.
It took about an hour to cruise out to Stellwagen Bank from Provincetown Harbor. We were there for more than an hour, at around 6 p.m. We hit the jackpot; whales were everywhere… on all sides of the boat. At $36, it was an incredible bargain.

The weather has been cool and breezy here in Provincetown, and even when it is cloudy this is a delightful place. Luis has some nice photos at One Photograph A Day.
Seven members of my family visited from Illinois last week, the first trip for several of them. It’s easy to forget how beautiful our city can be when you look at Luis’ photo of The Lincoln Memorial at One Photograph A Day.

As the weekend winds down, here are some photos from Luis at One Photograph A Day that he took at the Dog Days Sidewalk Sale on 14th Street NW this weekend.
Luis has more photographs at One Photograph A Day. This crash occurred at 15th & P NW around 8 this morning.
Luis took some photos in Chinatown last night after the storm. Click here for the other two pics at One Photograph A Day.

You can purchase this dog pillow for $174, a 40% savings! (Photo: Luis Gomez, One Photograph A Day.)
Luis posted this at One Photograph A Day… we love our dog a lot, but NOT $174-for-a-pillow-a-lot, even if it is 40% off the original price of $290. I admit, though, that is a fine-looking dog pillow.
From OPAD:
Washington, DC– Every dog deserves a good pillow. This one is on SALE! Instead of $290 your pup can have it for $174. Lupe is not interested and she already has two good pillows. But just in case, Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams at 1526 14th Street NW.
The weather is really disgusting this morning. Bluh. Thus, I post a photo of a cute dog taken this past weekend: Lupe of Borderstan (yes, she’s our dog) at the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Ride on Saturday on Constitution Avenue / The National Mall. Luis has a slide show of his photos from Rolling Thunder over at One Photograph A Day.
Hey, I am not calling anyone names. It’s on the back of the truck in this photo posted at One Photograph A Day. Luis says he spotted the Euro Trash truck in Borderstan at 15th and S Streets NW. According to Wikipedia, “eurotrash” may refer to:
- Eurotrash (term), a pejorative term referring to various perceptions of some Europeans
- Eurotrash (TV series)
- A pejorative term for Eurodance or Europop
- “Euro-Trash Girl“, a song by Cracker
- “Euro Trash Girl”, a song by Chicks on Speed
- “Eurotrash”, a song and album by Zeromancer
- “Eurotrash”, a short story in the collection The Acid House by Irvine Welsh
Luis put together a slideshow, “Red Photos,” and posted it to his photo blog. There are photos here from around the world, including Borderstan, of course. Enjoy.
Luis took these photos of the cherry blossoms in bloom by the Tidal Basin. I avoided the crowds this year, so far. My niece in suburban Chicago told me that is was snowing there tonight (Sunday). I miss Chicago, but not April. I was there for 10 springs and I think it snowed four times in April.
I will be more than delighted to post photos of your dog: Just send them to me, PLEASE! In the meantime, here are some more photos of Lupe, our Border Collie–Cardigan Welsh Corgi cross. Luis took these black-and-white portraits following a portrait shoot for a client. He posed her on a bar stool and began clicking away. Tell me that Lupe is not one of the cutest dogs in Borderstan… go ahead… I double-dog dare you.

“Snow Day.” Borderstan… looking east down the 1400-block of Corcoran Street NW. (Photo: Luis Gomez, One Photograph A Day.)
Monday was a beautiful, bright snowday in Washington… the only real snowstorm we have had all winter. So, we were curious to find out here in Borderstan how many readers went to work–or not. I have lived in Washington for 16+ years and this tends to be a stay-at-home city even when snow merely threatens.
