Our latest Pet of the Week is Paddington, a dapper dog with an Instagram account. Paddington is also the proud winner of the Borderstan/The Cheeky Puppy Halloween photo contest.

Here’s a little more about Paddington from his owner:

Paddington Kattan — better known to friends, neighbors and legions of Instagram fans as Paddy the Fatty — is one of the most dapper dogs around. Perennially dressed in a bow tie or bandana, Paddy displays a certain sartorial swagger whether he is surveying his domain from his Kalorama balcony or charging down Connecticut Avenue to stock up on cow ears and bully sticks at The Cheeky Puppy. Constantly at odds with his human, Ilana, over the lack of crispy bacon in his daily diet (Paddy is unswayed by kosher dietary laws), he is nevertheless a doting pup who rewards his mom for her love and care by jumping on (almost) everyone who comes to their house.

She sleeps quietly in her crate at night, loves to ride in the car, and adores beef jerky treats. Bluebell is a patient, affectionate girl who is so excited for her forever home. Pet of the Week: Miles

by Borderstan.com September 26, 2016 at 1:15 pm 0

Our latest Pet of the Week is Miles, a loving, older dog who sports a gray beard. Here’s a little bit about him from his owner, Cathy:

Miles was adopted from City Dogs Rescue in November 2014. Mostly miniature schnauzer with some Pekingese and Australian cattle dog thrown in, Miles is 100 percent sweet.

He loves long walks in the morning to chase the squirrels in Lafayette Square or to visit his friend Fala at the FDR Memorial. He also loves cuddling on the couch, homemade treats and playing fetch with squeaky tennis balls and soft toys. At the end of a long day, Miles loves to visit Logan Circle and say hello to his dog friends.

The only thing Miles doesn’t love is being away from his mother. But with a lot of love, patience and hard work, he now understands that allowing her to go to work means more squeaky tennis balls, treats and soft toys for him!

Miles will be celebrating his 10th birthday this fall and looks forward to sporting an even more distinguished gray beard.

Pet of the Week: Roger

by Borderstan.com September 12, 2016 at 12:30 pm 0

Our latest Pet of the Week is Roger, an independent and humble tabby kitten. Here’s a little bit about him from his foster parent, Katie:

Roger is an independent and humble little man, who excels at being a low-key cat. He’s excellent at entertaining himself and isn’t too needy or demanding. He’s curious about what his people are up to, but he’s great at respecting your personal space while investigating. At the same time he is thrilled about a good petsession, and will roll around in cat bliss, occasionally falling off the bed in his excitement. After he’s had his fill he will want to go about his business and regroup.

Roger still needs some help figuring out how to be his best cat self – he often confuses a tower fan with a scratching post, much to the amusement of his foster mom. Roger isn’t a shy dude, but he will thoughtfully assess a person and new room before diving in. Once you’ve been given the green light, he will mosey over and rub against your legs. Roger got along swimmingly with his recent cat sitter, who glowingly called him “an incredibly sweet cat.” We couldn’t agree more!

Those interested in adopting Roger can find more information on his City Dogs Rescue adoption page.

Our latest Pet of the Week is Dolly Parton, a 1 1/2-year-old hound mix from Rutherford County, N.C. Here’s a little bit about Ms. Parton from Rural Dogs Rescue:

Dolly is a fantastic puppy friend. Even though she only has three paws, she loves to romp with all her friends. She has lots of energy and spunk. She is VERY strong-willed. When she is done with something (walking, bathing, eating, etc.) she makes sure you know, usually by laying down wherever is most convenient for her. She does get tired pretty quickly, so walks have to be limited. Depending on her energy level, she can go 1-3 blocks without a pretty significant break. She will lay down in the middle of the street/sidewalk when she decides she’s done. She’s a snuggler and wants to be in the same room no matter what you’re doing. She likes to watch out the window and chew on her rope toy. She loves to meet new friends, dog and human alike! She is very interested in the tiny humans she comes in contact with, and will snuggle and play with the regular sized humans all day.

Those interested in adopting Dolly Parton or other pets can find more information on the City Dogs Rescue adoption page.

Pet of the Week: Rugby

by Borderstan.com August 1, 2016 at 1:15 pm 0

Our latest Pet of the Week is Rugby, a cuddly, purring cat who makes a wonderful Netflix companion. Here’s a little bit about him from City Dogs Rescue:

While you might be attracted to Rugby’s trendy buff coloring, his delightfully big ears, and his charming pink nose and paws, he’s the perfect example of beauty being on the inside. He’s the nicest guy around, and loves to cuddle up next to people. If you’re watching TV, Rugby is sure to be next to you on the couch checking out the latest Bachelorette contestants. When he’s not watching TV, he’s displayed an avid interest in staring down the occasional bug that has snuck into the apartment, which is mighty helpful to his humans. Rugby has demonstrated athletic prowess at catching toy mice and is hoping to refine his skills with more practice.

Rugby is a true gentleman and has great manners. He knows his way around a litterbox, doesn’t knock over all of your belongings, and excels at not biting or scratching. Rugby purrs easily and might even suckle if he’s really feeling especially blissful. Adopt Rugby and you will have a big-earred purring machine of your own!

Pet of the Week: Tiki

by Borderstan.com July 18, 2016 at 1:30 pm 3 Comments

Our latest Pet of the Week is Tiki, a former stray who loves to snuggle, nap and chew on bones. Here’s a little bit about him from Rural Dogs Rescue:

Tiki is an approximately 4-6 month old terrier mix who was found as a stray in D.C. and never claimed. Tiki is a red brindle sweetheart who just loves to snuggle. He is playful and moderately energetic but not mischievous. He loves beef bones and naps on the couch. He gets along well with other dogs of all sizes and is also good with cats. Tiki needs a little work on crate training, but he is clearly smart and eager to please (house training was a cinch). Do you have room in your family for this wonderful little ginger-baby?

Our latest Pet of the Week is Dominick, a 10-month-old black cat rescued from a shelter Pocahontas County, W. Va. Here’s a little bit about him from his foster parent, Jodi:

My name is Dominick and I’m about 10 months old. I was rescued from a shelter in Pocahontas County, WV and I arrived in the D.C. metro area just a little while ago, hoping to find my forever family. I am part of the elusive “urban panther” tribe, meaning I’m a black cat. I’ve very soft and silky, or so foster mom tells me. I currently live with an annoying dog who tries to lick me ,and two other cats, and one of them is always licking me too. I’m very chill and I take this all in stride. I love to curl up next to foster mom or just watch the world outside the window. I was in a cage at the shelter since October, so I spent most of my life behind bars and now I’m just enjoying a different view. I’m very sweet and calm, but I do have a playful side and I’m just now discovering the joys of cat toys.

Those interested in adopting Dominick can find more infromation on the City Dogs Rescue adoption page.

Pet of the Week: Asha

by Borderstan.com June 20, 2016 at 12:00 pm 0

Our latest Pet of the Week is Asha, a mixed breed pup saved from the illegal dog meat trade in Thailand. Here’s an excerpt from her bio shared by Rural Dog Rescue:

Asha is an approximately three year old mixed breed who arrived in D.C. from Thailand on March 22nd, rescued from the illegal dog meat trade. Asha is very friendly and loves seeing new people. She is eager to please and has lots of energy for daily walks. She is good with other dogs and likes to play. Asha presents many of the Jindo breed traits – incredibly smart, clean, athletic, hunters, clever escape artists, generally quiet but good guard dogs, and extremely loyal. She has the potential to be an amazing dog but her experiences have also been traumatizing. Asha is not for everyone; she is a project dog. She needs someone who is willing to devote much of their time and patience to helping her get out of survival mode, understand her anxiety, appreciate her breed, and someone who can teach her how to ‘be’ that amazing dog. During car travel, Asha is very anxious. She will shake in unfamiliar surroundings, and is wary of strangers. Outside, she is highly prey driven and thus searching for escape routes, or is hyper-focused and frantically rooting for anything that may be hiding underground.

Even though she is impeccably house-trained, to keep Asha as calm as possible during her transition from Thailand, she has spent most of her time in a ‘Florida room’ with a concrete floor that does not beckon her to dig for rodents. Though traumatized, Asha remains very reserved and respectful, she is a gentle girl who happily greets us with a soft wag and a howling song! She loves to go for bike rides and is slowly gaining more confidence in her surroundings. She cannot wait to find a forever family that will help Asha become the wonderful dog that she wants and deserves to be.

This week’s Pet of the Week is Pasquale, a ginger and white pussycat who lives in Dupont. Here’s his story from his owner, Deborah Saks:

He was born to a feral cat in West Virginia. After the mother cat had weaned the kittens she was spayed and returned to the wild. His exact birthdate is September 10, 2009.

His name is from the 18th century Italian comedy, “A servant to two Masters,” written be Carlo Goldini. Pasquale is the character who you only hear about. He never makes an appearance during the play and he is blamed for everything that goes wrong. When I saw the play at the Kennedy Center I knew my next cat would be called Pasquale.

He was born on a friend’s deck and spent his first six weeks in a wicker basket which she had placed on the deck when she realized the mother cat was pregnant. Pasquale is from a litter of four. He was used to being handled, as my friend has three lively young children who were always picking the kittens up.

Pasquale moved to D.C. a few days before Thanksgiving. I had arranged to have a week off from work to spend time with him in his new surroundings. He came to D.C. in a cardboard box and was full of fleas and had a tick under his chin. After removing the tick, I gave him a warm bath and made sure all the fleas were gone. I dried him with a hair dryer (on low speed) and combed out his fur and after all that excitement he then curled up on the bed and went to sleep.

After seeing the vet and getting a clean bill of health he quickly decided he was going to become a city cat and resides in Dupont Circle. He walks on a leash and also likes the occasional bike ride. He also understands French.

You like cute animals, right?

We’re launching a new feature here at Borderstan. Presenting: the Borderstan Pet of the Week, a bi-weekly posting that shows off some of our city’s premiere pets.

First up is Lil Joe, a 3-year-old dog who can be adopted. Here’s an excerpt from his bio shared by the Rural Dog Rescue:

Lil Joe came to Rural Dog Rescue in the Spring of 2015 with a big “391” spray painted on his side after being dumped by his hunters. He was adopted in June 2015 and within 12 hours of being in his new home, Lil Joe scaled the backyard fence and took off for a nearby park in Alexandria, where he remained for a long period of time. Dedicated volunteers kept vigil and set up feeding stations for Lil Joe. He was fed every night but never came close enough to any humans to be captured. He seemed content getting his nightly meal and going on his way. However, a life alone in the woods, especially during the winter months, is no life for a sweet dog. Lil Joe was captured on December 5 and is now in a foster home.

Lil Joe is very quiet and never barks. He gets along great with dogs of all sizes from Yorkies to large labs and is playful once he warms up to them. He has displayed NO aggression or resource guarding. Lil Joe completely ignores the cats and chickens. He is good with well-behaved children. Lil Joe likes to ride in the car and take long walks in the woods, trails and quiet neighborhoods – he does not pull on the leash. Lil Joe would be considered low energy; he is not a hyper hound and does not counter surf. Lil Joe will need to go to a home with a minimum 7′ privacy fence or a home that can hand walk on leash. Lil Joe has no hunting drive at all but does like to follow scents. Lil Joe is a very loving boy but not a confident dog. He will absolutely need to go to a home with another dog that will let him snuggle. The more dogs the better!

To adopt Lil Joe or other pets from the Rural Dog Rescue, visit the organization’s website.
