From Matty Rhoades

Total crime in the Logan Circle area was up slightly in April from the previous year. On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, there were 58 crimes reported in Police Service Area (PSA) 307 last month, compared to 52 in April 2010.

PSA 307 covers an area from L Street NW on the south to S Street NW on the north and from 9th Street NW on the east to 15th Street NW on the west. All numbers are from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Crime Database.

Most of the increase can be attributed to thefts from autos (“smash and grabs”) or “TFAs,” but there were also slightly more robberies and assaults last month than in April 2010. At the same time, burglaries declined and the number of thefts held steady on a YOY basis.

MPD Police Service Area 307, Thefts from Autos, Jan. 2011

The location of the 22 thefts from autos in PSA 307 in January 2011. (MPD Crime Database)

The number of crimes in Logan Circle’s Police Service Area (PSA) 307 last month was the same as in January 2010: 47. However the distribution by type was a bit different. Last month there were only three violent crimes in the entire PSA, compared to 11 in January 2010. Property crimes were up, though: 44 in January 2011 compared to 36 in January 2010.

Check Borderstan’s Local Resources Page for links to information on police and crime.

However, the other part of the story is how those numbers compare to the previous two Januarys. In January 2008, there were 99 crimes in PSA 307, and the following year (January 2009), there were 87 crimes. The drop in total crimes from 99 in January 2008 to 47 in January 2011 is a 53% decrease. There were 14 violent crimes in January 2008 compared to three last month, while the number of property crimes declined from 85 to 44.

Reading the local crime reports on the MPD Second and Third District listservs is usually routine, especially after you’ve done it for a couple of years. But, on occassion something does jump out at you for any number of reasons. Here’s our pick from the previous week.

From MPD: “On Thursday, January 25, [sic] 2011, 10:55 pm a UCSA/PWID Marijuana offense occurred in the 1700 block of N St., N.W. (PSA 208) and was subsequently reported by the MPD. During a traffic stop resulting in an arrest a cyclist was found to be in possession of marijuana. He was charged accordingly. This is a closed case.”

The following is a list of robberies, assaults, stolen autos and burglaries in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area over the past week. Crimes are from police reports for Police Service Areas 208, 305 and 307.

MPD Crime Database MPD 2D Dupont Circle

There were 47 burglaries from November 17, 2010, to January 16, 2011 — compared to 27 in the same period the year before. (MPD Crime Database)

The number of burglaries in the weekly Crimes of Note have been noticeably on the rise in recent weeks. A check of MPD’s Crime Database confirms the trend for the past 60 days — not only are burglaries up in the three police service areas (PSAs) that cover the Dupont-Logan-U Street area, they are up in the corresponding police districts and citywide.

The weekly Crimes of Note report is below the fold… January meeting of PSA 208 is Tuesday, January 18, at 1620 V Street NW, 7 pm.

Burglaries are up 42% in D.C. on a year-over-year basis for the past 60 days (November 17 to January 16). Burglaries are up 55% in MPD’s Second District and 62% in the Third District. In three local PSAs, burglaries are up 62% — there have been 73 burglaries in PSAs 208, 305 and 307 in the past 60 days compared to 39 a year before.

Assistant Chief of Police Diane Groomes told Boderstan that the spike is not gang-related activity. “In the Second District 208 area, we have the burglar that is a career-type criminal (usually drug user). In the upper end of 2D and other parts of the city, we do see groups of juveniles banding together, committing series of burglaries to get immediate cash/property. It’s opportunity crime for them, versus drug dealing,” Groomes said.
