ANC 2F Reverses Decision to Block Sidewalk seating for M Cafe and Bar.

At its regular monthly meeting last night, Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2F/Logan Circle voted to endorse an application for a sidewalk cafe by M Cafe and Bar, opening soon at the corner of 14th and R Streets. This reverses a decision made the previous week.

M Cafe and Bar: Outdoor Seating (mostly) Okay

Two weeks ago, ANC 2F’s Community Development Committee (CDC) voted to protest an application for outdoor seating by the soon-to-open M Cafe and Bar (1634 14th Street NW). Representatives of the establishment had not shown up for the committee meeting to discuss the matter.

At last night’s ANC meeting, CDC Chair Commissioner Walt Cain (district 02) confessed there had been a scheduling error. The CDC normally meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month. This is usually the last Wednesday of the month. However, there were five Wednesdays last month. M Cafe and Bar management were told to come on the last Wednesday in May – a week after the actual date of the meeting.

Given the above, a representative of M Cafe and Bar was given a chance to present directly to the full ANC, so M Cafe and Bar can go forward on its plans for outdoor seating in time for the scheduled opening in mid-June. M Cafe and Bar wants to have 51 outdoor seats in all. Of these, 20 tables will be on the 14th Street Side. Six tables will be on an elevated platform facing R Street. An awning will be placed eight feet off the ground, protruding more than six feet on both portions.

There were concerns that part of the proposed design would create a bottleneck on the 14th Street sidewalk. The ANC voted to approve M Cafe and Bar’s request for outdoor seating with a minor modification to relieve the bottleneck.

M Cafe and Bar, a long-awaited 90-seat Italian restaurant at 14th and R Streets, may have to open without outdoor seating. It will be located on the ground floor of the newly constructed apartment building The Aston (1634 14th Street).

Representatives from the restaurant, failed to show up for a scheduled hearing requesting ANC approval on its public space permit at the May 22 ANC 2F Community Development Committee meeting.

The committee voted unanimously to recommend the full ANC vote at its next meeting to oppose the application. The reason: there will be no community or ANC review of the sidewalk seating plans before it comes before DC authorities for approval next month.

M Cafe and Bar and Bar di Bari both located at the corner of 14th and R Streets are aiming for a June 15 opening. Bar di Bari will be located on the northwest corner in The Northern Exchange, a former Verizon building.

The Aston, a 31-unit condo building on the corner of 14th and R Streets NW, is expected to be complete in late December of this year, and buyers are scheduled to move-in starting in early January, 2013.

In addition to the building’s six stories of living space, 3,000 square feet of ground floor retail will also soon be filled. According to Will Lansing of Valor Development, the ground floor retail space will be an Italian restaurant called M Cafe Bar from Iraklis Karabassis of Sette Osteria.

The new 14th Street restaurant (with its flagship location in Chevy Chase) is expected to open this fall, and will feature menu items like homemade pastas and pizzas, as well as meat and fish dishes.

Condos in the Aston include one bedroom, one bedroom plus a den and two bedroom living spaces, and range in price from the $300’s to $1.1 million. All condos feature hardwood floors, gourmet kitchens with Bosch appliances, porcelain tile and marble countertops.

Stayed tuned to Borderstan.com for updates on the opening of both the Aston and M Cafe Bar.
