From the organizers: “Unfortunately due to the weather and the wet field conditions, tonight’s U Street Movie Series screening of Bag It has been cancelled. There is also a 50% rain in the forecast for our scheduled rain date of Thursday, so we will be cancelling the screening of the film altogether. Join us on 10/22 at 12 pm INDOORS (no chance of rainout!) for the screening of Waiting for Superman and community panel on education policy at Shaw at Garnet-Patterson Middle School. More details to follow soon, and thanks for your understanding of the cancellation of the movie screening.”
The U Street Movie Series has its next-to-last film of the season on Tuesday, September 20. On the heels of the successful DC plastic bag tax, the evening will feature Bag It, an award-winning documentary about the effects of plastics on our waterways, oceans and human bodies. Big Birding Day, a short glimpse into the world of competitive birdwatching, where three friends attempt to see as many species as possible in 24 hours, will precede the film.
Free reusable bags will be distributed by Clean Currents to the first 75 attendees, and prior to the films Clean Currents will speak about wind power for the home. Also preceding the films, Emily Rice, an environmental protection specialist with the District Department of the Environment, will speak about the effectiveness of DC’s “Bag Tax” and introduce the films. Reusable snack-sized “Lunchskins” bags will be sold as a fundraiser to benefit Friends of Harrison Recreation Center .
Admission is free and films will be shown at the field at Harrison Recreation Center on V Street between 13th and 14th Streets, NW. Gates will open at 7 pm. Attendees are encouraged to come early starting at 7 pm to picnic in the park, listen to music spun by local DJs. Please note that park regulations do not permit pets on the field. Free popcorn will be provided to the first 100 attendees beginning at 7 pm. Showtime will be at sundown, exact time will vary. Local food truck vendors will be on site serving food.
The final movie of the season is indoors on Saturday, October 22. The feature is Waiting for Superman, followed by community forum on education policy. Location is indoors at Shaw Garnet-Patterson Jr. High. 2001 10th Street NW from noon to 3 pm.; hosted by the U Street Neighborhood Association Education Committee
